School of Resource and Safety Engineering

History and Mission

Rooted in the Mining Engineering program established in 1952 at Central South Institute of Mining and Metallurgy during the national higher education restructuring, the School of Resources and Safety Engineering is one of the initial engineering schools of Central South University and a pioneer and leader in metallic mining nationwide.

Having evolved successively from the Department of Mining at Central South Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the Department of Resource Development Engineering at Central South University of Technology, and the Institute of Mining and Geotechnical Engineering under the School of Resources, Environment and Civil Engineering at Central South University, the School of Resources and Safety Engineering was officially founded in May 2002. 

Guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, the school endeavors to align its development with national strategic demands for mineral resource exploration, development and utilization. It has been awarded a host of prestigious honors, such as the National Huang Danian-style Faculty Team and the National May Fourth Red Flag Youth League Committee.

Disciplines and Research Platforms

The School of Resource and Safety Engineering hosts world-renowned, nationally influential key disciplines under the national Double First-Class initiative. It boasts two national key first-level disciplinesMining Engineering and Safety Science and Engineeringand three national key secondary-level disciplinesMining Engineering, Safety Technology and Engineering, and Geotechnical Engineering. A distinctive discipline cluster with strong mining advantages has taken shape, with its core disciplines ranking top in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) in the relevant field.

To support specialized talent training, cutting-edge research and technology transfer, tackle key national scientific and technological challenges, and advance global competitiveness of the mining industry, the School houses high-level research platforms including one State Key Laboratory and two key Laboratories under the National Mine Safety Administration. It is equipped with more than 1,500 sets of core instruments worth over 60 million yuan, covering full experimental and testing capabilities across its disciplinary fields.

The School leads the industry in deep mining, intelligent mining and green mining of metallic ores. Since its founding, it has been awarded 1 National Natural Science Award and 5 National Science and Technology Progress Awards, enjoying an outstanding reputation across the sector.

Faculty and Scientists

The School of Resource and Safety Engineering maintains a high-caliber, internationally competitive faculty with strong teaching, research and industrial expertise. Its distinguished scholars include 5 members with national-level titles such as academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, recipients of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, and the National High-level Leading Talent. In addition, the school has 4 national young talents and over 20 provincial young talents.

Currently, the School has more than 100 faculty and staff members, including 89 teaching and research personnel (43 professors, 36 associate professors) and 52 doctoral supervisors.

Student Development

The School of Resource and Safety Engineering cultivates high-caliber graduates with solid professional competence, outstanding practical ability and a global vision.

It offers 3 undergraduate majors, 6 master's degree programs, 5 doctoral degree programs and 2 postdoctoral research centers, with an enrollment of over 900 undergraduates, more than 600 graduates and over 30 postdoctoral researchers.

The curriculum is practice-oriented and academically rigorous, preparing students for careers in mining engineering, safety engineering design, construction, management and research.

To foster global perspectives, it maintains academic exchanges and joint education programs with world-class universities, research institutions and enterprises.

Each year, most graduates pursue successful careers in scientific research, government agencies, enterprises and public institutions, becoming outstanding professionals in their fields.
